2010 Governor’s Fire Prevention Day at the State Fair Friday, August 27, 2010
Information on Explorer Activities
This year all of the events will again be taking place in Carousel Park. There is a link below for the skill sheets and descriptions of events and criteria. PLEASE take a look at them as the events have several criteria changes from years past. We want to emphasize firefighter safety in all areas!
The events for this year are Bunker Gear & SCBA Donning, Cardiac Arrest Management, Ladder Raise, Room Search & Rescue, and Spinal Immobilization. Teams of four explorers from each post will participate in each of the events. The events will be competitive and the Governor’s Council on Fire Prevention will be awarding 1st through 5th place trophies. There may be some minor changes due to the environment in which the events are taking place. Use these skill sheets to practice and prepare for the event as they will be the ones the judges will be scoring teams from. You do not have to bring this with you to the fair—judges will have forms for each post when you check in with them.
There will also be an Individual Gear Donning Competition. Interested Explorers can sign up the day of the event, in between team events. Explorer’s attendance at the flag raising ceremony is mandatory; specifics will be explained in a meeting on Friday morning. Explorers are also entered in the parade, so if your post has some type of uniforms, they should bring or wear those. There is no float in the parade this year. The number of Explorers participating in the parade has been limited to two youth per post. Please select two Explorers to represent your post in the parade.
You must be at Midway Stadium (1771 Energy Park Drive St. Paul, MN 55108) no later than 06:15. This logistical change is due to the State Fair not issuing the parking permits necessary to meet inside the fairgrounds. Although we are meeting in the same location as all other Governor’s Day participants, Fire Exploring will have our own caravan that proceeds into the Fair prior to the rest of the Governor’s Day participants. The Fire Exploring briefing for the Fire Explorer Challenge will take place once everyone is parked in the Giraffe Lot (north side of Heritage Square). Anything you plan on bringing into the fair (gear, air tanks, etc.) must be put into gear bags or the like and clearly labeled with your Fire Department Name and Post Number on it. At the briefing, we will be loading all equipment onto a vehicle that will be taken to the competition site in the fairgrounds.
Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to a wonderful day at the State Fair! Thanks again for everyone’s help with this event.
